Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Christian singles, don’t you love the way the Wycliffe Bible Commentary
relates these ancient customs, traditions and beliefs to our day, so that we
can search our hearts to be sure we are not counting on manmade traditions,
rather than Christ’s finished work on the cross to take us safely home to
Heaven?
Why The Pharisees And Sadducees May Have
Been Frustrated And Depressed:
The reason I thought the Chief priests, scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees
might have been depressed, angry, and frustrated was because:
1. They exhibited some of the root causes of depression, those
negative and dangerous attitudes and behaviors that, when practiced over
time, will lead to depression. Note that they were not merely attempting to
protect their faith from a suspected heretic; they were more interested in
keeping their place of power and respect, and they were determined not to
lose it.
2. They seemed to lose in every confrontation with Jesus because they
didn’t realize he knew what they were thinking. Then Jesus would turn the
tables on them leaving them speechless, in a state of confusion and
helplessness. There are several examples that show the chief priests were no
match of wits with the Son of God: In Luke 20, they attempt to question the
authority of Jesus, trying to make him say that his authority came from God.

amongst themselves, as we take our places as “flies on the wall!”
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people
in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and scribes came
upon him with the elders, and spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what
authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this
authority? (They are seeking to discredit him.)
