Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Other Biblical Characters Who Evidenced Signs Of
Depression And Loneliness
Sarah’s Abuse Of Hagar Caused Great Suffering,
Hostility, and Depression
Abraham and Sarah were flawed people, as were most of the men and women
in the Bible, (and all of us too, Christian singles!) but Abraham’s
strongest quality was his unshakable faith in God. We are told that God
accounted Abraham’s faith as righteousness, so in a way, we can see the
importance the Lord places on our faith in Him, by the way he communed with
Abraham.
Hagar, the handmaid to Sarah, was an Egyptian whose name meant “flight”
or “stranger” which seems prophetic when we see what happened to her,
through no fault of her own. (Well, that’s true if you overlook the fact
that Hagar despised Sarah, the barren wife, when she became “with child.”)
There is no record of Hagar’s reaction to Sarah’s plan to give Abraham a
child through her handmaid. In ancient times servants and slaves had little
say in what they would be used for, and often were mistreated. However,
Abraham treated Hagar with kindness and he loved the son she gave him.
However, there was tension building in Abraham’s tent, and it was not big
enough for two furious women. Can you imagine the stress this caused them,
Christian singles? But Sarah held all the power, and Hagar had none, which
had to make her feel helpless and hopeless, or in a word, depressed. We can
