Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Depression: The Cause of Suicides In The Bible
Here we see the Lord tenderly ministering to the depressed and dejected
Elijah, sending an angel to cook for him and tell him where to go next.
Elijah was clearly strengthened by the ministering angel’s touch and his
food, and it seems that Elijah had a new lease on life, enabling him to
travel 40 days without food. Can you imagine, Christian singles, what it
meant to Elijah to be pampered by an angel? And, as if that wasn’t enough,
the Lord spoke to Elijah and allowed him twice to voice his
grievances! The Lord is always ready to listen to our troubles, and He is
just a prayer away! But Elijah had much, much more in store, including a
celestial chariot ride, on a one-way trip to heaven!
Before he is raptured to heaven however, he is given the honor to anoint
a new king in Syria, and another new king in Israel, and finally, a
replacement for himself! He must have been beside himself with excitement,
as he realized his days as a prophet were coming to a close, and he soon
would be with the Lord. In I Kings, 19:19, Elijah departed and found Elisha
plowing a field, and Elijah cast his mantle on him. There was a lot going on
in the meantime, and none of it was good for King Ahab. He did acquire some
land he wanted through the blood -thirsty Jezebel’s help. Elijah had a
chance to reprove Ahab and even pronounce Ahab’s doom, so Ahab humbled
himself before the Lord, and the Lord had compassion and said that the doom
coming would be moved forward to the time when his sons took over.
Jezebel, who was a Phoenician princess prior to her marriage to Ahab,
corrupted Israel and her husband as well, with pagan idolatry. Elijah’s
prophecy that “the dogs will shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel”
was fulfilled when Jehu came to power. Elijah had a date with destiny,
however, and in 2 Kings, Chapter 2 we can watch as Elijah was taken up in a
whirlwind to heaven!
