Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
It is hard to prove that Adam and Eve suffered depression after the fall
because the Lord didn’t record their emotional response, but Christian
singles, we can ask ourselves how we would have felt, losing all the
blessings they had, including never having to experience death. And worse
yet, all they got out of obeying the devil instead of their Creator was the
knowledge of good and evil! The first innocent animal had to be killed to
make clothes for them, thus giving us the first illustrated sermon on the
wages of sin, and the only way to cover sin was in the shedding of innocent
blood. This illustrated sermon was meant to drive home the lesson that sin
was so evil and perverse that only death could atone for it. Thank heavens
that we born after Jesus came to die to pay the penalty for our sins.
The ultimate blood sacrifice was so powerful that it covers every human
being, if they accept this payment for their sin by asking Jesus to be their
Redeemer!
Now, as we go back to the garden of Eden, we see the first couple
expelled, and forced to work hard for their food, struggling with thorns and
thistles, a cursed ground that may have looked like the cracked desert
floor. They probably had to carry water, or learn irrigation. Eve lost her
lofty status. She also suffered great pain in childbirth, but since her
desire was for her man, she could not avoid another pregnancy by resisting
his embrace. And her first born son was no blessing because he rebelled and
killed his younger brother! Over the years since they were expelled from the
garden, Adam and Eve must have been depressed, considering that they lost an
earthly paradise, and gained the death awaiting them, for God said, “for
dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return.”
