CHRISTIAN SINGLES; DEFEAT DEPRESSION BY HEALING YOUR MEMORIES
Chapter 27. Solution #2 Is Inner Healing Still Controversial? Can We
Judge It By It’s Fruits?
This chapter is giving Grandma fits because #1 Inner Healing has helped
many people heal and forgive, but #2, it’s critics see danger in the
practice, mostly due to the connection it has with questionable Jungian
influence and alleged original ties to New Age notions.
I can remember back when President Jimmy Carter’s sister, Ruth Carter
Stapleton, defended her book, “The Gift Of Inner Healing.” Her critics
called it heresy and warned Christians not to try it. Mrs. Stapleton died
some years ago, but the controversy lives on, though the practice of healing
of memories has support now from many Christian leaders, both Protestant and
Catholic, and it appears to be mainstream.
The way it is taught now is somewhat different from the early days, and I
think many of those first criticisms have caused pastors, counselors and
Christian psychologists to modify the way they take a person through the
practice. But Christian singles, if you feel uncomfortable about trying it,
please refrain, ask your pastor and other Christians you trust if they can
recommend it. Pray for the Lord’s guidance. He may want to heal your
memories in a completely different way! In fact, prayer and forgiveness for
those who have hurt you in childhood may be all you need to heal those
painful memories that cause loneliness and depression. Many times we think
we have forgiven people in our past who have harmed us, but we really haven’t.
Do you want to know if you have truly forgiven someone who has hurt you? Try
this: Think of a person you have forgiven. Do you still feel the pain
their cruel acts caused? This is your sign that you have not completely
given the memory to the Lord, forgiven and forgotten. Remember, Christian
singles, forgiveness is an act of the will. You do it because God requires
us to forgive, so that He can forgive our trespasses against others. This
does not mean that you have to go to the person who hurt you and tell them
they are forgiven, indeed, some of them might be dead now. A grievous act
against a child is very hard to forgive, but your mental and spiritual
health depends upon using your will to forgive someone who does not deserve
it! Then you ask the Lord to remove the memory from you, so that depression,
shame and other torment can be eradicated, and you can live a victorious
life, free from nightmares of the past. As you are feeding on the Bible’s
promises, granted to those who have overcome all hatred and bitterness, you
can indeed renew your mind and become a new creation in Christ. Those old
memories will no longer be able to rob you of your joy.
